The Window Seat

The Window Seat
The title of this series is a reference to a description of my work by a friend, who told me that it was as if she was a passenger in an airplane, viewing the passing landscape from her window. In creating this series, the process I employed involves printing black and white photographs onto transparencies, arranging a collection of them on an overhead projector bed, and then photographing the projected composition on a dark backdrop. While developing this project, my main focus was the process by which I combined multiple photographs. Initially approached in the fully-digital environment of Photoshop, the early photomontages I made appeared overly crisp and refined, lacking the kind of emotive or human qualities I sought. I diverged from the purely digital process to experiment with alternate ways of composing montages, eventually deciding that an overhead projector provided certain photographic and psychological characteristics that computer software could not create. What I have come to understand is that the basis of these compositions is the combination of completely unrelated subjects, locations, times and events. It is the intuitive relationships found between these elements that lead me in creating The Window Seat.
